RNs, Nurse Practitioners, LPNs and Nurse Midwives

Florida State CE Requirements

Registered professional nurses (RNs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs) and others, such as advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNPs) and nurse midwives, who are licensed in Florida, must complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

As part of these 25 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of AIDS/HIV, 1 contact hour of Domestic Violence and 2 contact hours of Preventing Medical Errors must be completed through a Florida State Board of Nursing approved provider, such as Alene Burke & Associates.

A one (1) contact hour End of Life Care course can be substituted for either AIDS/HIV or Domestic Violence.

A 3 contact hour AIDS/HIV course, through a Florida State Board of Nursing approved provider, is needed if you are a new licensee or you are reinstating your nursing license.

All Florida State course completion is entered into CE Broker by Alene Burke & Associates, as required by law.

District of Columbia CE Requirements

All continuing education must be provided by a "certifying organization recognized by the Board", such as Alene Burke & Associates and NurseCeusOnline.com.

Registered Nurses (RNs) must complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) must complete 18 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Advanced Practical Registered Nurse (APRN):
  • Nurse Practitioners must complete 15 contact hours of continuing education, including pharmacology, every 2 years.
  • Nurse-Midwives must complete 15 contact hours of continuing education, including pharmacology, every 2 years.
  • Nurse-Anesthetists must complete 15 contact hours of continuing education, including pharmacology, every 2 years.
  • Clinical Nurse Specialists must complete 15 contact hours of continuing education, including pharmacology, every 2 years.
All District of Columbia course completion is entered into CE Broker by Alene Burke & Associates, as required by law.

Other States

All of our nursing courses are accepted for the continuing education option for renewing your ANCC (ANA) specialty certification renewal as well as nursing license renewal requirements of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Washington, and West Virginia as well as for the license renewals for advanced practice nurses in most states.

CE Requirements for Pharmacists, Consultant Pharmacists and Nuclear Pharmacists

Pharmacists, licensed in Florida, must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years. As part of these 30 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of AIDS/HIV and 2 contact hours of Pharmaceutical Medication Errors must be completed. Additionally, at least ten contact hours must be completed with live classes. The remaining 20 contact hours can be completed with online courses.

Consultant Pharmacists, licensed in Florida must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education per calendar year with a Board approved Consultant Course

Nuclear Pharmacist, licensed in Florida, must complete 12 contact hours of continuing education per calendar year with a Board approved Nuclear Course.

CE Requirements for Nursing Home Administrators

Nursing home administrators, licensed in Florida, must complete 40 hours of continuing education every 2 years. As part of these 40 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of AIDS/HIV or End of Life Care and 2 contact hours of Preventing Medical Errors must be completed.

All other courses must be in at least one of the following domains of practice:

  1. Personnel
  2. Finance
  3. Marketing
  4. Physical resource management
  5. Laws, regulatory codes and governing boards
  6. Resident care

A maximum of 10 contact hours can be completed with online courses and no more than 15 contact hours can be taken in a single content area.

All courses listed for nursing home administrators have been approved by the Florida State Board of Nursing Home Administrators.

CE Requirements for Respiratory Therapists

Registered and certified respiratory therapists, and respiratory practitioners in critical care and non-critical care, licensed by Florida, must complete 24 hours of approved continuing education every 2 years.

As part of these 24 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of AIDS/HIV, and 2 contact hours of Preventing Medical Errors must be completed. The Preventing Medical Errors course must consist of the following components:

  • missed treatments
  • documentation errors
  • equipment errors
  • patient errors
  • communication errors

A maximum of 12 contact hours can be completed with online courses and a minimum of 16 hours must be related to the direct delivery of respiratory care services. Up to 8 hours can be in the following areas:

  • Educational techniques
  • Management
  • Risk management
  • Personal growth

All courses listed for respiratory care professionals have been approved by the Florida State Board of Respiratory Care.

School psychologists, licensed in Florida, must complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years. As part of these 30 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of Domestic Violence and 2 contact hours of Preventing Medical Errors must be completed.

All courses listed for school psychologists have been approved by the Florida State Office of School Psychology.

CE Requirements for Licensed Midwives

Licensed midwives, licensed in Florida, must complete 20 hours of continuing education every 2 years. As part of these 20 contact hours, at least 1 contact hour of AIDS/HIV, 1 contact hour of Domestic Violence, 2 contact hours of Preventing Medical Errors and 1 contact hour of Laws and Rules must be completed. These courses must be given through a Florida State Board approved provider, such as Alene Burke & Associates. Courses that have been approved by a Florida Board of Nursing provider meet these requirements.

All courses listed for licensed midwives have been approved by the Florida State Council of Licensed Midwifery.
