Alene currently serves as a nursing consultant to several companies throughout the nation and is the Nurse Planner for ANCC provider status in that capacity. She is also the President of Alene Burke & Associates. Her degrees in nursing were granted by Queensborough Community College in New York (ASN), State University of New York, Regents College (BSN), and Adelphi University (MSN). She has, for the last several years, presented seminars for major universities throughout the nation, served on task forces such as the ANCC task force for Innovative Changes in the Accreditation Process, and has authored hundreds of independent study courses for virtually all healthcare providers in all healthcare settings. Alene has served as an innovative and creative nursing staff development director for more than 15 years in major metropolitan New York medical centers, such as the Veterans Administration, and has simultaneously presented seminars and consultations for groups of healthcare professionals, including nursing educators, about the adult teaching and learning process, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' (JCAHO's) requirements for education and competency, the assessment of educational needs using data, the basing of educational activities for entire organizations on actual needs rather than tradition, and the evaluation of the impact of education in terms of patient outcome and other aggregated data variables. Her initiatives, including ridding hospitals of useless annual mandatory training by using data and her organization wide model for education and competency, have been praised by JCAHO. She has developed an organization-wide education and competency model, published in the February 2000 issue of Nursing Management. Alene has written numerous other publications, has spoken at national conferences, has received several grants, and has also conducted research studies in her primary area of expertise, nursing and healthcare education and competency.
